This fungal network that gives life to mushrooms bides its time until there is enough moisture bodies above ground.

The damp earth lingers around dead wood, playing host to delicate mushrooms like burgundy drop bonnet and angel's bonnet, and sharp eyes spot the lilac fibre cap, pretty and poisonous.

More easily seen is the honey fungus clinging to the base of trees and trooping funnels as they march through the woods.

The abundance in October may awaken an instinct to pick them, but the harvest can be lethal, and as the old forager's warning goes, all mushrooms can be eaten, some only once.
