Some of us hear words like, my soul thirsts for you.
and think, yes, that's exactly what I feel.
Others, I'm sure, hear them and think, I'm not sure I've ever felt anything that dramatic.
Or that we don't expect that sort of language, that sort of desire in church.
Some of us are really expressive, aren't we? And some of us are really quiet.
Some of us know exactly what's going on inside ourselves.
And I don't know why I'm pointing to me for that.
Some of us know exactly what's going on inside ourselves.
Others find their inner life much harder to read.
Others find it costly or awkward or unfamiliar.
So before we go any further, let me say this clearly.
Psalm 63 says, It's not a test of whether you can produce the right religious feelings or whether you tick exactly like David does.
It's not a command to become a different temperament.
David doesn't give us a performance to imitate.
David gives us a song to listen to and to learn to sing ourselves.
And songs are generous places.
They give words to those who have words.
And they lend words to those who don't.
