Summer Mail Bag

Now, I was out of town most of the week, so I didn't get a lot in, but I did go to see Tori Amos at the Beacon Theater on Saturday night.

I am super, super eager.

I purposely didn't call you or ask you about this because, as you know, I am a huge Tori Amos fan.

And...

You know, if you've never seen Tori Amos live, it is unlike any concert you could ever go to.

That's really...

You and I are both big fans.

Seen her a lot.

Seen her a lot over a long period of time.

And maybe it's what you come away with every time you see her, but that was really what I was feeling watching her on Saturday is there is just nobody who does what she does.

You hear it and it just is not, you know, there are other... piano-playing singer-songwriter girls.

There are other rocker girls.

There are other, you know, the different categories you might put her in.

But there is nothing that sounds and feels like the music that she makes.

She's been mixing up the set list every night on this tour.

She played...

She did two nights at the Beacon.

I saw the second show.

If I'm right, she opened with the same two songs and then the entire rest of the set was different.

She played Silent All These Years for the first time on this tour because people have sort of been freaking out like, maybe not every night, but you got to play it sometimes.

She hadn't played it, but in a really striking, really beautiful arrangement.

She did, which I took very personally, though it had nothing to do with me, A version of Leonard Cohen's famous Blue Raincoat, which is a song she's recorded and a song that she does.

She said it's, you know, I do a lot of covers.

This is one of my favorites.

She did a fantastic version of that.
