And it literally means to think, to contemplate, to reflect, to meditate.
And it encompasses many layers and many levels.
It's to do what so few do, which is to slow down.
And ultimately, at its highest and deepest levels, to stop entirely.
to become entirely still and completely open and receptive.
It is to become aware, it's to become present.
It's to open the self and the heart to receiving divine guidance, wisdom, and knowledge from beyond, from the divine presence of Allah, the source of all knowledge, the source of all light, the source of all wisdom, the source of all understanding.
With proper contemplation and reflection, A human being, a seeker, one who is seeking truth and light, the divine presence of God, can make more progress upon the spiritual path in a single hour than in 70 years of rote voluntary worship, than in just simply going through the motions of mechanical worship.
Why is this? How is this? This is because the power and benefit of worship is dependent upon the alignment and orientation of the heart.
If the body is worshiping, yet the heart is not properly oriented and aligned, the benefit is minimal because the reception is minimal.
Yet when the heart is connected and truly turned towards Allah Almighty, that is when worship becomes real.
That's when reception becomes real, when the heart and soul truly derive their sustenance from worship, when the greater flow and transmission of light is made possible.
And when the reality of the statement that Allah Almighty shares and reveals in the Holy Quran, that human beings are created for worship, That's when the reality of that ayah, of that statement manifests.
So how does contemplation, reflection, and meditation align and orient the heart? Well, it's because they increase awareness.
And awareness is the key to spiritual growth, development, and evolution.
It is because awareness increases perception.
