So for Black History Month, what would you like people outside of the black community to understand? about being allies, not just celebrating achievements during October, but continuing the conversation year round to create fairness and belonging and care?
I
If we still feel a need to censor how we feel, amongst allies, that's problematic.
And I don't think that talked enough about because you meet someone, you seem to think they're a really good ally.
But when you start to talk to them over time, you realize that there's still that discomfort and there's still that I want to defend.
The second thing is, you know, just a real ally continues to educate themselves.
If your bubble means that everyone that surrounds you agrees with you, that's problematic in itself.
You need to find people that will challenge you, people that will disagree with you.
They may not be your best mates, you may not want to hang out with them all the time, but it's really important because it creates that balance.
You know, they may not be your friends, as I said, because you don't agree with them fundamentally.
This idea that we have this month and everyone talks about black history, you know, and whatever.
And then for the rest of the year, You haven't helped develop anyone in your team.
You haven't seen that grad that doesn't have anyone else that looks like them in the organisation that could do with your support.
You haven't actually sponsored anyone in the room where they're talking about someone because of their difference and said something out loud.
You know, you haven't been kind to ask them for a cup of coffee just to find out how they are.
