What truly makes someone a Christian? Is it heritage, personal choice, good deeds, or even strong feelings? In this message from Titus 3:1–8, we explore the radical reality at the heart of true…
that they have been born again, that there has been an awakening in their mind and in their heart as they have been united together with the Lord Jesus Christ and therefore have a union with the Father in heaven.
Henry Scougal, An ancient writer, he wrote a book called The Life of God in the Soul of Man.
And that's how he described the true center, the heartbeat, what marks a true believer of God, what marks a true Christian, is when you have the life of God, the divine life in the soul of man, where we become partakers, even as it mentions in Peter, of the divine nature, where there's a union together with God and with man.
For instance, the Bible uses the word conversion in Acts 15, three, and sometimes we refer to converts or someone who's converted to Christianity.
It's called the transfer in Colossians 1 from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of God's beloved son.
In Ephesians 2, it describes salvation as being first dead in trespass and sin and then raised to life with the Lord Jesus Christ and seated with God in the heavenly places.
And all these are metaphors for a change of location, a change of life, from death to life, from darkness to light, to describe what happens when the divine, when the spirit of God encounters the soul or the heart of man.
In Colossians 1.27, the scriptures there speak about the mystery of the gospel, which is, he says, Christ in you, the hope of glory.
There's the heart of it, Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Likewise, in 2 Corinthians 5.17, it says if anyone is in Christ or Christ in you, he is a new creation.
It's like a new Genesis, a new beginning, a new life because Christ is in you and because you are in Christ.
There is that word in Christ or Christ in you is speaking about the union between Christ and us.
This is the heart of what it means to be a true Christian.
And then he goes on to talk about the spirit of God coming like the wind and being born of the spirit.
John there in that third chapter is describing the place of good works in the life of a believer.
