First up, a grieving man searches for civilization following a deadly pandemic.
I heard a voice on the radio.
My name is Hig.
I'm Seema.
He's
an unknown.
We've survived because we have rules about how to deal with unknowns.
Directed by Oscar nominee Ridley Scott, The Dog Stars is set in 2035, a decade after a catastrophic flu pandemic wiped out most of humanity.
a grieving former mechanic who lives at a deserted airfield in Colorado alongside his dog Jasper, and also with Bangley, a paranoid former Marine played by Oscar nominee Josh Brolin.
Bangley maintains a heavily secured defense perimeter and has a strict shoot-first policy against all trespassers.
Higg uses his vintage Cessna plane to scavenge... for fuel, delivers supplies to a nearby Mennonite community, and obsessively monitors a faint recurring radio signal originating from Grand Junction.
When a brutal ambush by desperate survivors ends in tragedy, Higg decides he has nothing left to lose and leaves behind Bangley to search for the source coming through his plane's radio.
Higg is forced to make an emergency landing in an isolated valley due to engine failure and is soon captured by Pops, played by Oscar nominee Guy Pearce, an armed, hyper-vigilant former Navy SEAL, and his daughter Seema, played by Margaret Quiley, who is a widowed medic.
After convincing the pair he comes in peace, Higg earns their trust in Seema's romantic interest and recruits their help to clear a runway so that they can fly together to Grand Junction.
but when they arrive, they find that life in Grand Junction is not the ideal situation they were hoping for.
When I saw the trailer for this, I predicted it would be a see-it.
And I give this film a...
Shove It.
This was a slow-moving film that really tested my patience while watching it.
Long stretches of time went by with little to no action or tension.
Elordi spends the vast majority of the runtime staring into the distance or puttering around his plane.
The second half desperately tries to inject excitement by pitching a romance between Elordi and Quali, but there wasn't an ounce of chemistry between them, and the story wasn't fleshed out enough to buy it.
If the screenwriters had instead just made it seem like after the pandemic hit, it left those two as the only attractive young people left with sexual needs, it may have been more believable.
