Nurture & Care: Exploring Scotland's migration stories through art

I've wanted to be a curator since I've been age four.

I went to the Barbados Museum with my grandmother and there was this curator there.

I didn't know what she was called at the time.

I just knew that she kind of told us about slave huts and locked us into one and showed us, did these amazing storytelling using all these different pieces of pottery and ceramics and et cetera.

And this really interests me.

And so I stupidly, I said stupidly, ran home and said to my father that I wanted to be the lady at the museum who did these amazing things and told these amazing stories.

In Black culture, We are told we can be a doctor, a lawyer, a business person, a nurse.

And if you don't want to do any of that, you take up a trade.

So you become a seamstress.

And if you don't want to do that, you get married.

And so my father sat me down and basically was like, okay, what color are you? And I'm like, I don't know, brown.

And where are you from? And I'm like, home.

And he's like, no, you're from Barbados.

And what's Barbados? And I'm like, home.

And he's like, no, it's a small island.

So do you think that they'll hire you or will they hire someone who's white? Don't be stupid.

Go upstairs and do your mass homework.

And I guess in other people, that's where the dream ended.

That just made me want to do it even more.

And again, in Black culture, artists are, especially from small Caribbean islands, it's not really a done thing.

So I went off and did business in university the first time.

I traveled around the world with my job because I worked in international construction.

And in 2010, I decided, nope, this isn't going away.

I really need to do something about this.

So I went back to college and went through all the different grades of whatever and got to the point where I needed to figure out if that was the end of it or whether I was going to take it further.
