The Weekly Perasha Parashat Vayera: Abraham's Leadership Role October 28, 2026

About this class The class explores the profound meaning behind Abraham's name change in the previous parasha, establishing him and Sarah as leaders of the world, embodying G-d's attributes. This sets the stage for Parashat Vayera, where G-d visits Abraham after his Brit Milah, an act of Chesed that Abraham then emulates by eagerly hosting three strangers. These strangers, representing diverse backgrounds, become recipients of Abraham's extraordinary hospitality, demonstrating his commitment to caring for all people, regardless of their faith or familiarity. The narrative then connects to the impending destruction of Sodom. Abraham, as the newly established leader of the world, feels compelled to pray for its inhabitants, even though they embody the antithesis of Chesed. This highlights his deep concern for humanity, a direct reflection of G-d's own universal care. The class contrasts Abraham's comprehensive approach to leadership and Chesed with Lot's more limited actions, emphasizing the importance of both personal conviction and family unity in spiritual endeavors. Finally, the Akedah (binding of Isaac) is presented as the ultimate test, where Abraham's dedication to G-d's will transcends even his deeply ingrained nature of Chesed and his hopes for the future, solidifying his role as the complete leader who follows G-d's command above all else. Key points - Abraham's name change to Avraham signifies his new role as a global leader, embodying G-d's attributes of care and responsibility for all people. - Abraham's acts of Chesed, from hosting strangers to praying for Sodom, are not random but a direct emulation of G-d's own compassionate leadership. - The seemingly disparate events in Parashat Vayera are interconnected, illustrating Abraham and Sarah's unified commitment to G-d's ways, which merits the promise of Isaac. - Prayer for others, even if seemingly unanswered in the immediate context, has a profound and lasting effect on the one who prays and their descendants. - The Akedah represents Abraham's ultimate test, demonstrating his willingness to follow G-d's command even when it contradicts his deeply ingrained nature of Chesed and his hopes for the future. <!--THE END--> - Rashi - Gemara - Chida Sources citedTopics#ParashatVayera#Abraham#Chesed#Leadership#Mussar#Torah#JewishWisdom#RabbiMosheHaber#TiferetShaul#Brooklyn#Shabbat#BritMilah#Sodom#Akedah#Sarah#LotIn this class 01. 0:00Introduction to Parashat Vayera 02. 0:33G-d Visits Abraham After Milah 03. 2:00Mamre's Advice: Public Milah 04. 4:30The Hottest Day and Abraham's Guests 05. 5:09Unconnected Stories in Vayera 06. 7:30Abraham's Name Change: Leader of Nations 07. 10:00Abraham Emulates G-d's Chesed 08. 12:00Abraham's Extreme Hospitality to Strangers 09. 15:00Abraham's Act of Chesed Detailed 10. 18:00Angels Ask About Sarah: Appreciating His Wife 11. 21:00Sarah's Role in Abraham's Leadership 12. 23:00Sarah Laughs and G-d's Response 13. 25:00Sodom's Destruction and Abraham's Prayer 14. 29:00Abraham Prays for Sodom's Wicked 15. 34:00The Power of Prayer for Others 16. 35:00Lot's Hospitality vs. Abraham's 17. 37:00Lot Knew They Were Angels 18. 38:00Lot's Wife and Incomplete Chesed 19. 40:00Sarah's Merit in Isaac's Birth 20. 42:00Akedah: The Ultimate Test of Following G-d
