Puerto Rico's Governor Jennifer Gonzalez signed a resolution proposing that U.S. President Donald Trump and the U.S. Congress recognize Puerto Rico as the 51st state.
Gonzalez signed House Joint Resolution 391 on Friday, October 16, saying it satisfies her administration's quest for statehood and represents Puerto Ricans' non-binding referendums.
Governor Gonzalez, who leads the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, said the resolution officially requests Puerto Rican admission to the U.S. on equal terms with existing states.
She said prior efforts had concentrated on conveying referendum results to Washington rather than requesting admittance through legislation.
Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917, serving in the military and contributing to its growth, Gonzalez added.
Congress has the constitutional right to admit new states, and the newest resolution seeks statehood.
The resolution does not affect Puerto Rico's political standing, and the Trump administration has not commented on the current request.
