Kwadwo KyeremantengHostWhat's the ticket to feeling more fulfillment? What's the, the ticket to feeling arguably more happy? Dr.
I just finished reading Scott Galloway's book, Notes on Becoming a Man, and it was one message that I could not unhear, and it was the topic and the theme of providing surplus value.
So what does that mean? As human beings, like I, I don't think this pertains just to being become, uh, being a man, but as human beings, are we leaving this world with more value than we took away from it? Are we lifting others? Are we, are we making people feel-More joy in their lives? Are we contributing more than we are taking away? And this is not financial, strictly financial.
What I mean by this is emotionally from a connections perspective, from a morale perspective, how are we contributing? And the magic of this, in my opinion, is that if we truly lean into providing surplus value, we are going to be more fulfilled.
And it's-- And to me, when I think about o- other examples, it's things that might not be intuit- intuitive.
It might be, especially in healthcare, what you're providing for your patients and their families, uh, supporting the community, uh, sharing your wisdom, creating an environment where there's psychological safety.
S- Like, there's so many ways that we can enter our profession, enter a room, the way we approach our families, that we could provide surplus value.
And if I look at my own life, areas where this has really-- where we've created surplus value, and it's-- that fulfillment has been there, raising my boys as an example.
Being there, uh, you know, the nature of my job, I'm not a-able to be there at every moment.
Like, I missed my son's, uh, track meet last night, or yesterday 'cause of, uh, unfortunately had, uh, work requirements.
But being a father, being there for them emotionally, being there there-- for them physically at key moments, modeling behavior that we want to, to exemplify, that has brought so much joy into my world.
How to behave, how to carry yourself, expressing love, hugging my boys and, and letting them know, like, "This is-- Mom and Dad are here for you in those tough moments and tho- and the good times." I think about our jobs as healthcare providers.
And for me, at a personal level, it's being there for our families in a tough, impossible ti-time to imagine.
You know, a lot of us intensivists are very skilled when it comes to saving a life.
