Shortly after midnight on the 29th of May 1980, Pam Head and Conrad Bostron stood outside a hospital in Orange County, California and they were waiting for their friend and co-worker, Dorothy.

He was still weak and so Dorothy had offered to walk across the car park alone, collect her white Toyota station wagon and bring it around to the hospital entrance.

Pam and Conrad waited and then in the darkness of this hospital car park they saw Dorothy's car coming towards them.

The headlights shone directly into their faces making it impossible to see clearly through the windscreen.

Pam and Conrad waved their arms trying to get Dorothy's attention but the car didn't slow down.

Perhaps Dorothy had received an urgent message about her four-year-old son and she was rushing home.

But by the time her co-workers reported her missing, whoever had been inside that car had almost an hour's head start.

At around 5 o'clock that morning, police found Dorothy's Toyota in an alley 10 miles from the hospital.

To anybody hearing this story for the first time, you might think the same thing that I did.

Because for months prior to this, an unknown man had been phoning Dorothy, at home and at work.

Sometimes he described where she had been, what she had done that day and even what she was wearing.

And sometimes he told her exactly what he intended to do when he finally got her alone.

Dorothy never knew who this man was but she thought that she recognised his voice.
