It was the largest courtroom in the region, the pride of all who saw and gathered there, but it wasn't in Philadelphia.
The issues considered by the men who gathered there were weighty ones, the intersection of rights and privileges and the common good, quite literally, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." but no one was waiting breathlessly to carry the result of their deliberations to Massachusetts or to Georgia.
The year was 1895, almost in the middle, almost halfway through this 250-year journey of America that we are remembering on this day.
500 people could crowd into its benches and galleries, but not nearly that number were there for this event.
Exactly 30 years and one week later, Dayton, Tennessee would become internationally famous as the site for what history has come to describe as the Scopes Trial.
It was a 10-day, much-hyped courtroom drama featuring a classic duel between two of America's greatest lawyers.
At issue would be the actions of one John Scopes, a 24-year-old biology teacher in the public school system who had dared to teach the theory of evolution.
The press and the world couldn't get enough of it.
But there was no press waiting on July 3, 1895.
