I'm Sarah Clements, a second-year medical student at McMaster University, and today we'll be discussing rickets.
This podcast was co-developed with Dr. Ranu Malhi, a general pediatrician at McMaster Children's Hospital.
Rickets poses a significant public health concern during infancy and childhood, requiring early identification and timely intervention to prevent long-term growth, skeletal, and systemic complications.
The prevalence of rickets is higher in lower and middle-income countries in comparison to high-income countries due to the introduction of supplemental vitamin D.
Despite this availability of supplemental vitamin D, specific populations in high-income countries such as Canada are disproportionately impacted by rickets, highlighting the need for focused prevention strategies.
By the end of this podcast, you should be able to: One, define rickets and explain the role of vitamin D, calcium, and phosphate in bone mineralization.
Six, identify prevention strategies to apply in clinical practice for high-risk populations.
