OverPressure Podcast Luke Mickelson & Austin

The Overpressure Podcast’s latest episode features Luke, a farm kid from Twin Falls, Idaho, who had a good sales career and a family he loved but still felt something was missing. Success, he realized, doesn’t mean fulfillment. That changed in 2012, when he heard at church about local kids sleeping on the floor and built them a bunk bed with his Boy Scout troop. The best material is the second bed. When his own kids asked for another Xbox, he took them to the garage to build one, then posted it on Facebook. That led him to Haley, a six-year-old who had only ever slept in the back seat of her mom’s car. In her new home, her bed was a pile of school clothes in the corner. When she saw the bed, she hugged it and kissed it while her mom cried. Luke, raised by a single mom himself, knew right then that this was about dignity, not just sleep. Quick gems from the episode: → His family built 21 beds that first Christmas. For many kids, it was the only gift they got. → Foster care and child protection workers told him a bed is often the hardest thing for them to find for a child. → After Mike Rowe featured them on Returning the Favor, 130 chapters launched in a year. Today there are more than 400, and they’ve delivered over 400,000 beds. → He estimates about 13 million American kids don’t have a bed, with more than 120,000 on the waiting list at any time. → His advice to nonprofits: the volunteer experience matters as much as the mission, because people feel fulfilled when they know the work wouldn’t happen without them. It’s an argument that purpose is often waiting right in your own town. Check out the Overpressure Podcast for the full conversation.
