20,000 Digi-Leagues Under the Sea

We’re revisiting Digimon Adventure 02 Episode 16, “20,000 Digi-Leagues Under the Sea,” and Cody’s big lesson about lying is testing our patience almost as much as his fear of the ocean. We get what the episode is going for, but when the rest of the DigiDestined are literally in danger, Cody agonizing over whether it’s okay to lie for help feels a little too much like toddler-level morality, even for a kids anime. Thankfully, the episode gives us plenty of fun along the way, including the Digi-Egg of Reliability, Joe stepping in with some much-needed perspective, and the debut of Submarimon, which finally gives Cody and Armadillomon their underwater upgrade. It’s an okay episode with a cool new Armor Digivolution, a few laughs, and one moral dilemma that had us doing a whole lot of eye-rolling.
