And this statement is really the only place where Jesus offers an actual description of Himself.

So to be as accurate as possible in our understanding, let's consult the Greek terms that are used.

It's the word used in Matthew 5:5, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." In Matthew 21:5, "Say to the daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey.'" Same word.

And then we have the phrase humble in heart, which translates the Greek phrase tapinos te kardia.

The word tapinos has the range of meanings lowly or humble, and it refers perhaps more to someone's position or station in life than their attitude.

It's used in James 4:6, "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." In 1 Peter 5:5, it's used twice, "All of you clothe yourselves with humility towards one another, for God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble." But perhaps a better commentary on the character of Jesus here comes in the next chapter, chapter 12, where Matthew describes how Jesus fulfilled the beautiful words of Isaiah 42, one of the famous servant songs in that prophecy.
