Air-cooling a Volkswagen engine has always been as much science as it is art. For decades, enthusiasts have debated which fan shroud cools the best, what compression ratio is ideal, which cylinder…
... like when you start with cooling, 'cause we, we, you know, when you're looking at the original Volkswagen motor, I think it's designed to run in the mid-3,000 RPMs, uh, or maybe even a little bit higher.
And with that original cooling setup, there's a l- a- and everybody now wants big motor and big transaxle with taller, you know, more freeway flyer and all that kind of stuff, which all of that stuff starts to affect ...
And it would, like you were saying, it's a chain that's connected with so many different parts, pieces, and angles, that depending on your application, you've gotta make sure you've got the right ring and pinion, you've gotta make sure you've got the right camshaft, right, so your, you're, you're in your sweet spot of your camshaft when you're cruising.
I mean, there's so many things that people don't take into consideration when they're thinking about cooling on their engine, you know?

A- a- if anybody takes anything away from this podcast today, I want it to be that there are no rules with this, and that every single aspect of this chain you're talking about is either positive or detrimental.

The decisions that you make when you are configuring the entire vehicle play into this.

So I think the, the perfect cooling system is dramatically different for different cars in the hands of different drivers, in, in different operating environments.

And, you know, we don't have huge mountains like the Rockies, but, you know, I could easily go up to Brasstown Bald, which is the highest point in Georgia, 4,400 or so feet, and there's 7% grades, and, you know, it's, there's, there's a lot of places I could test.
