World faith leaders gather for rare summit in Salt Lake City

Well, something really exciting is coming to Salt Lake City today through Saturday.

Faith leaders from around the world are gathering for the G20 Interfaith Summit.

We're talking about leaders from all varieties of religions: Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, and of course, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I'm actually going to attend a few parts of the summit, including later today, and I'm really excited about it.

So you're going to give us an update tomorrow morning when we have our show, but we wanted to get a preview of the event today and why it's so special and that it's being held here in Utah.

So joining us is, uh, KSL senior religion and arts reporter Carol McKeta.

Carol, thanks for joining us this morning.

Thank you, Greg and Holly.

It's great to be with you.

You are right.

This is an incredibly important, uh, event that's taking place.

Everyone is familiar with the G20 Summit.

That will happen later in the year in December in Miami, and so there was an opportunity for, uh, an American city to host the G20 Interfaith Forum, taking place before that and with discussions hopeful to take forward to the G20 Summit in December.

And, uh, Cole Durham, who is a, a law professor at BYU, is, uh, currently the president of this organization and put forth, I'm sure, the invitation for this forum to take place here in Salt Lake City.

And, uh, opening, uh, ceremonies are at the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

Carol, a lot of us heard, uh, President Dallin H. Oaks, uh, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, speak at the National Cathedral just a few weeks ago.

Yes.

And to me, that was really one of the most powerful addresses I'd heard, and I'm hoping that he'll play a role in this event.

[laughs] Is, is that...

Am I, am I hoping right?

You are, uh, correct.

The opening ceremony takes place, uh, this evening at 7:30, and, uh, President Oaks is among the speakers, uh, this evening.

We know of his, um, platform that he has taken around the world about religious freedom, and I, I think you're right that that will continue, Greg.

So Carol, there's a couple of fascinating conversations that as I've looked over the agenda, so I, I'll be there for, like, the pre-opening, I guess, with the discussion-

Yeah
