Know Your History with Shannon Gill
Oct 20, 2026 · 35 min · 18 segments
Shannon Gill talks with Gerard about the infamous Leigh Matthews hit on Neville Bruns, and how it changed the AFL afterwards.
At the time, he is what everyone thinks will be his last season of league football.
At that stage... he's the biggest name in footy and probably seen as the greatest player of his era.
I think as we look at it now, he's often seen as the greatest player ever, but he certainly looked at as the greatest player, um, of all time.
But I think it's fair to say in that era, um, Players were not clean skins and Lee was known as Lethal Lee for a reason.
There's Neville Bruns, who is a Geelong player, a good player, and he's the captain for the day.
Steve Hocking, who we know from later on what he's been involved with in the administration of footy, is a 11 game player.
And then the other person who we could do a whole segment about one day is Mark Jackson, who we see he's...
Um, earlier that year, he'd released a single called I'm an individual, which had hit number 15 on the charts.
He's unashamedly had would tell the world that he was out to make money with footy.
Uh, I think sometimes it's looked upon as him being a sort of clown or the joker of footy.
I'd say he's more the Heath Ledger joker than the Jack Nicholson joker when it comes to what he was.
