Sometime around seven months into recovery where I was being honest with Jacqueline.
I remember a moment where she was suspicious about something or she had doubts about something or it was obvious that she did not trust me.
And I remember starting a sentence that I did not finish, but the sentence was very revealing and it revealed what was in my heart, but it also did some damage to her.
And the sentence began with this.
I've been honest with you for seven months now.
And then I stopped right there.
But I think you know what the rest of the sentence would have been.
And so did she.
Because the rest of the sentence was, I've been honest for seven months now.
You should trust me by now.
You shouldn't be having these doubts.
And what happens when we do that with our partners is that we are basically handing them an invoice.
We're saying, I have provided seven months of integrity, seven months of honesty.
And so the payment is due now.
You owe me trust.
And the reason that we are thinking that way and the reason that we are handing her the invoice is because we have this internal ledger that's going on inside of us that is called entitlement.
And sometimes we don't even know that that ledger is operating inside of us.
But the ledger goes something like this.
Because I did blank, I am owed blank.
Because I did seven months of honesty, you owe me trust now.
And a lot of times the way you can find an entitled belief, the way you know that you have a ledger going on inside of you is because there's a lot of shoulds and should nots that are going on in your self-talk.
She should do this and she should not do this.
She should not be asking this question.
She should trust me by now.
She should not be so upset because it's been X amount of time.
