Today I'd like to speak about Nachman bar Yitzchak, one of my favorite Amoraim, an extremely important teacher in the Babylonian Talmud.

He died in the year 356 and it was especially associated with the great rabbinic academy of Pumbedisa.

I think one of the reasons why I so enjoy Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak's meteoric rise to fame as a scholar is because he came from rather humble background.

His father was apparently not from a rabbinic family, not a learned family, although his mother was and she had considerable challenges as a result of this.

First of all, that her son, young Nachman, would study with her brother, Acha, who was his first teacher in the wisdom of the Torah and of course gave him that first propellant to his later greatness.
