In 1878, it was a growing railway and manufacturing town, but it was almost the kind of place where gossip traveled quickly and privacy was almost impossible.
Esther Cox lived in a small rented cottage with her entire family: her eldest sister, Olive; Olive's husband, Daniel Teed; also Olive and Daniel's two young sons; Esther's sister, Jenny; Esther's brother, John; and Daniel's brother, who also was named John.
Now, contemporary descriptions portray Esther as small, lively, and strong-willed.
She wore her hair short and apparently had little patience for being controlled.
Then, just before the disturbances began, something happened to her that was not mysterious at all.
In August 28, 1878, Esther went for a carriage ride with a local man named Bob McNeil.
Now, according to later accounts, McNeil drove her to an isolated area, stopped the carriage, pulled out a revolver.
Exactly what he intended to do has never been proven, but Esther believed she was in serious danger.
Afraid of being discovered, McNeil put away the gun and drove Esther back to town.
