Every climate scenario, including the ones where emissions fall fast, commits the world to roughly 20 centimeters of sea level rise by 2050. Most of the heat that drives it is already stored in the…
Charlotte LoveGuestPaulHostSo then let's get into it.
What is CFRI? What's the problem that you're tackling here?

Well, the problem is CFRI I know you've discussed this in the past with past episodes is sea level rise directly is what we're looking at is sea level rise is effectively permanent on human timescales.

Which is...
Sorry, just to jump in for people listening, which is...
It's not just about melting ice, but it's also as things heat up, you have expansion of the water, too.
So right.
Right.
Sea level.
There's so much warming that we've already so much extra heat that we've already shoved into the oceans because of global warming over the decades and centuries.
So
that's why you're saying it's permanent on our time

Just because our current understanding of these vast oceanic circulations um is that it takes centuries to millennia for some of the bigger ones to overturn so that that heat that gets in into that deep ocean it's very slow moving currents um so it takes time for them to come up again and release that heat so um And there's papers stating that like 90 percent of the the energy that is coming in and that's that's being trapped.

So the ocean, you know, just like the air is in your car tire, right? When it heats up, that air expands.

About 40% of sea level rise that we have seen so far has been just because of that thermal expansion.
So then let's get into it.
