100th Episode with Guy Picciotto (Fugazi / Rites of Spring)

Welcome back to the "Indie Basketball Podcast." This is where indie rock meets the NBA's finest.

Today is episode 100.

Um, I'm super excited about that.

It's so crazy to me.

I can't believe it's, it's been 100 episodes of talking to musicians and, and people in the sports media industry and, and, um, all in between.

Uh, it's been so amazing.

I'm so excited because today's guest for the 100th episode is the legendary Guy Picciotto from Fugazi and Rites of Spring.

Um, a massive Wizards fan and an all-around punk legend.

So I'm so excited to get to his interview.

Um, he's super knowledgeable about basketball, and he's got some great stories to tell.

Um, but before that conversation, I did want to, you know, reflect a little bit.

Um, you know, this whole thing started as a, a combination of, of simple mashups of band names and players.

And believe it or not, this was 15 years ago.

This was-- You know, I started this on Tumblr.

Uh, you know, the first kind of memes being Rylo Kyrie, m- Bone Iverson, uh, My Morning Jacket, LeBron Iver.

Um, it was on Tumblr, and it was, it was very crude, but you know, I would be really curious to know if anyone listening was on that Tumblr game back then.

Um, that was a long time ago.

I was in college when I started this, and, you know, I took a lot of time off, and then the pandemic happened, and I was bored.

And so I brought it back on Instagram.

You know, started doing more of the mashup names, started doing album cover photoshops.

Um, I started the podcast.

Uh, I started Half Court Sessions.

I started making merch.

I started a Discord, and that community is so awesome.

Um, and you know, uh, it's still going.

I'm still building it.

I'm still-- You know, got plenty more to do, and it's, it's been really fun doing this, so I can't believe to be at 100 episodes for this.

It's been pretty wild.

Um, but in reflection of this 100th episode, I wanted to, you know, ask our Discord, you know, some of the highlights and some of the favorite episodes they had, some of their favorite guests.

So I just wanna shout out a couple of those episodes.

In case you haven't listened to, you can always go back and listen.

But thinking back to that first episode, it was a fantasy draft.

And to have on the first episode, to have, uh, TK, Trey Kirby from No Dunks, to have Blake Murphy, who is now a full analyst for the Raptors, um, and Saman, who, you know, is a Grammy Award-winning, um, you know, producer and, and you know, he is, you know, so important in kind of like the hip hop world and, um, and what he does for, you know, in media and, and with, you know, being a vocal voice for Palestine.

Like, he is such a cool dude.

So that-- Have that group for the first episode was pretty insane.

And then in debut, it was a really funny episode.

Um, I go back sometimes and, and see some of those jokes, and that's, that's a good, good team right there.

Um, I also loved having, you know, some repeat guests.

You know, Nick Ewing of Local Natives, Dick Thorburn from the Unicorns and Islands.

Having, uh, um, you know, this ritual of having, you know, um, Small Black come back for the draft every year, which spoiler, that's coming up.

He's coming back for the third year of that.

Um, some-- Uh, Def, Butch Field definitely said, uh, you know, the Playlist Makers episode, to get Dan Ozzi and Ian Cohen and, and Josh in there and to make a playlist together was a really fun experience, and, and I hope you guys liked it too.

It was a great playlist too.

It was kind of all over the place.

Um, some people said Dan from The Wonder Years just 'cause he was a great storyteller.

Um, and that is true.

He is a great storyteller.

He knows, he knows how to tell a story.

Um, Steven from Pup being the ultimate Raptors fan.

Um, I'm not just gonna name every episode 'cause that's kinda pointless, but I just wanted to reflect on that and just, you know, talk about some of my favorite moments and some of the Discord's favorite moments.

And, uh, it's, it's been a lot of fun, and I c- I'm excited to keep going.

Um, but hey, happy 100.
