In Their Words: Brendan Fevola

So Fev, what does AFLW mean to you?

It's a good question, Bec.

[laughs]

Um, I think, you know, coming from a father of four daughters, um, and, you know, I got the common question all my life, "Are you having a boy? You having a boy? You having a boy?" And I gotta go, "Oh, when are you gonna have a boy? They all need to play footy." Well, no, they don't, because girls can play footy now.

So, um, you know, I think, what is it, season 11? So-

Yep

... um, 10 years prior, I think AFLW, what it means to me is it gives an opportunity for girls who...

When I was playing back in the day, when I was a young kid, what'd they play it to, under 14s or something? Under 14s, and then they weren't allowed to play anymore.

Mm.

Yeah.

There was nowhere else for them to go.

Mm.

So they'd get lost to other sports.

And I think for you girls now, you're, you're building such a pathway for young females that wanna play footy.

And I hear some of you girls talk about, um, and people I know that play footy in AFLW landscape, we had to get changed in the cars.

Yep.

We've got no change rooms.

Yeah.

You know, it's always about the boys, and God, that shits me.

So it's like, you know, having AFLW clubs and, and I think the AFL, I think it's 52% members for the male are f- are female.

Yep.

Something like that.

It's like that's more than male.

Mm.

So females love the sport just as much as what males do.
