Q&A on the series War with actor Nick Mohammed. Moderated by Liz Riesterer, In Creative Company. Two top London law firms clash over a shocking divorce case that rocks the legal world, with elite…
When we first meet your character, Michael, as part of the Taylor & Byrne team, he's often in the conference room with the other lawyers.
How much were you able to think about setting yourself apart from the rest of the group with your own distinct personality and voice?
Well, I guess the good thing is, um, I, I'd had, uh, quite a nice sort of character breakdown from George, uh, Kay, the writer.
And I talked a lot to Ben Taylor, the lead director on the show, who, who I've worked with before actually as well, and, um, particularly because w- we've shot two seasons back to back and we probably get to know a little bit more about M- Michael's sort of backstory and why he is like he is, uh, in season two.
But, um, I w- uh, you know, he's, he's sort of, he's a bit of a stickler to the rules is Michael.
I don't think he's very well-liked in the office, which is always quite fun to play.
And so quite early on we sort of made some rules for Michael about who likes him, who didn't like him, the f- the fact that he's probably quite frustrated that he's not more senior than he is.
I mean, he is a senior lawyer at Taylor & Byrne, but he's not a partner and, and, you know, I think he's probably got his eye on that.
There's a moment early on where Michael's asked to leave, um, the room to reduce ears overheard-
Did that really reveal the choices you were able to make within those office dynamics and relationships with the other characters?
Be- b- I mean, because, you know, George's writing is, I mean, it's so great and it's obviously so plot driven and there's all the twists and turns.
But, you know, o- o- often dialogue for some of the ensemble characters can be quite sparse.
You know, you're chipping in here and there and you're, or you're round a big sort of board table.
Um, and so it, it's sort of important to kind of, you know, make a character choice and sort of s- stick to it and have, have sort of set rules as to kind of, like for example, N- Nicholas played j- by, by brilliant, um, James Picardo, we, we really early established that, that he really hates Michael and that he, he's quite condescending to him and, you know, in public.
