THE WEEKLY REPORT TO MADAME ROUGE MONDAY Today saw one of those rare mornings, Rouge, when I have truly felt the rest of the night before.
I finally had time to set up the bird feeder on my office balcony.
The warble of jays and magpies at their breakfast accompanied mine, plastering over my brief but marked disappointment at not getting my customary booth this morning because of... because of you-know-who.
She is tenacious.
I shall have to start getting up earlier if I wish to claim my usual spot.
What serenity the birds in the good repose bestowed
was needed, as much of this morning has seen me dishing out correspondence with, well, whomever might conceivably be able to help with repairs for Labyrinth Park.
I thought there might be something promising when I reached out to the Portoli family of the Ashcombe Maze Keepers.
They've tended both the cypress and lavender mazes in Ashcombe for decades.
Seeing the lilacs and hyacinths here in the park, I thought they were just the sort of people who might have the know-how for our predicament.
Sadly, the answer is no.
While an incredibly charming labyrinth and very lovely people, those cypress and lavender twists and turns have no mechanical components.
They were sorry to say such an endeavor would be thoroughly outside of their experience.
Taking my mind off the park repairs was the arrival of the municipal office of causality inspectors.
Calvin, the logician, was leading the routine survey of the hotel premises.
It was good to see him when I greeted them in the lobby.
I rarely get to stop by the municipal offices anymore since Condor left.
We caught up over the usual.
How was Laura? How was I doing? Was his brother still considering taking vows with the Brotherhood of Miscellaneous Observances? Yes, and was as undecided as ever.
He asked after you, by the way.
We reminisced for a time in the lobby.
Our old adventures together...
I keep hoping the Sphinx will come by for a visit one of these days, he told me.
You know, Theo, no one's been able to riddle as well or since, he said.
He is one of the few besides you from time to time to still call me by that name.
