Hi, I'm Verne Gagne, retired after 35 years of professional wrestling, and now we're entering a new era.
The AWA is introducing its Team Challenge Series, an ongoing team competition with standings determined by a point system, a first for professional wrestling.
That, along with new television technology, brings you, the wrestling fan, directly into that ring.
You know, I'm so excited about it I may come out of retirement one more time.
[laughs] No, I'm only kidding.
I hope you really enjoy it.
I'm Ralph Strangis, and alongside me is Greg Gagne, a man whose 16 years experience in the ring is going to provide us with invaluable insight here at the satellite base.
In the next 60 minutes, you're gonna see the world's greatest wrestlers.
You're also gonna see the Beverly Hills Knockouts, and wait 'til you see what these ladies do in a ring.
Also, hot, new exciting rock and roll to help us usher in a whole new era in wrestling.
Well, Ralph, you know, in all my years of professional wrestling, I've never seen anything like this.
And for the first time, you fans are gonna feel what I felt for 16 years: the arm drags, the body slams, the dropkicks.
You're gonna see wrestling like you've never seen it before.
All right, so hang on.
Strap in.
Here we go.
We're going to the satellite, and our first match.
[crowd cheering]
And here he is, 6'4", 240 from the beach in San Diego, Tommy Jammer.
What do we know about this young man?
Former amateur, uh, wrestler.
Track, both indoor and outdoor.
Held the record in the high jump at 6'5".
Now he does his training on the beach with wind sprints and three miles every morning.
And he is in great shape, proving it as he hops the ropes.
Waiting for him in the ring is Tom Burton, somebody you know something about.
Well, I wrestled Tom Burton.
He's a veteran.
He's a killer.
He's going out there today to try to beat Tommy Jammer.
He could do it.
