Daniel Mitchell finally emerges from the shadows. Not a ghost—a man, patient and broken, who has spent forty years hunting the men who killed his sister. Now only Claire's father remains, and Daniel…
The next morning I called the police.
I don't know what I expected.
Justice, maybe.
Or at least the illusion of it.
I told them about the stalker, the figure in the backyard, the voice at the door.
I didn't tell them about Sarah Mitchell, or the room in the basement, or the grave beneath the barren patch of earth.
I wasn't ready for that.
Not yet.
The deputy who came was young, polite, and utterly useless.
He walked the perimeter of the property, checked the locks, shone his flashlight into the trees at the edge of the yard.
He found nothing.
No footprints.
No evidence.
No sign that anyone had been there at all.
"'Your father has dementia, ma'am,' he said, not unkindly.
"'Sometimes they see things, get confused about what's real.' I saw him too, last night, standing by the fence.
Did you get a good look at him? No.
It was dark.
He nodded, wrote something in his notebook.
We'll increase patrols in the area.
If you see anything else, give us a call.
Then he left.
I stood on the porch and watched his cruiser disappear down the road, and I understood that no one was coming to help us.
Whatever was going to happen, we would face it alone.
