And they said, whether you want to call it brainwashing, whether you call it indoctrination, just kind of the process of getting people to come to terms with what you want them to and to believe whatever you're putting in their heads, right? And there's many different tactics it's funny because on the surface of this so this is the buddha field and group and it got up to about 120 members and on the surface it seems like so completely different than like the flds or any other group we've covered i was like some of the stuff is weird and yet the tactics as they're broken down the things he was doing were like oh actually not so different
the similarities were actually frightening as i look back on my childhood realizing that some of those same tactics were used.
But when you're in it, you don't see the purpose behind their tactics.
You don't always think for a second that they are trying to do something bad or trying to take advantage of people.
But me watching this because I was never a part of the Buddha field, it seems so obvious.
It's easy to jump to that conclusion of how could anyone possibly fall for this until you think back on your experiences.
And in my case, I found myself in something very similar.
Yeah, well, and again, we've talked kind of all of these groups.
We've kind of talked about the fact, too, that like growing up where you are raised in a certain religion or group is so different also than being converted into a group, right? But the tactics to keep people in, whether you're born and raised in it or whether people are converted to it, do end up being the same.
And yeah, this one is like...
This guy who is going trying to be an actor, a ballet dancer, all these things, super obsessed with physical fitness and diet and health and Botox and all this stuff.
And you're like, how on earth could that relate or be similar at all to fundamental Mormonism? And yet there are things that are so similar.
It is crazy to me.
The tactics and what it seems like in almost all of these groups, these closed off groups, these cults, the same tactics are used because they are the tactics that work.
And so you see them do it over and over and over again.
And you see these cult leaders actually do research on other cults to find out how.
And in Jaime's case, it sounds like that's what he was doing.
How did people accomplish this? How can I get away with the same thing? in controlling people and he definitely did seem like he was way over the top in his methods i mean he was something else for sure
yeah but he ended up with the same results of people who were saying i would have given my life for him
yeah
i loved him right and so at the end of the day no matter what that group looks like and what it is that brings people and draws people into them A lot of the times it's community, but it's also finding the right people for the community, right? You're going to have different people who are joining Jaime than you are who are joining Jonestown.
You're going to have different people, but whatever it is that's bringing them into that community and that group, that sense of community ends up...
I think I like this one sentence that someone said.
They said, "'You're not joining a cult.
You're transforming into a happier person.'" Right.
