Grassroots: The Minor Hockey Show
Oct 17, 2026 · 22 min · 8 segments
A poditorial to begin this new season. Richard explores a role he believes is much needed in Canada and why. (Podcast music from classicals.de)
We know considerably more about motor learning, skill acquisition, perception-action coupling, representative practice design, and athlete development than we did 15 or 20 years ago.
Yet you can walk into many minor hockey practices and you can still see drills that are much like those used decades ago.
Frankly, who'd want to? Asks the fellow who's buried himself in dozens and dozens of them.
A better question is, who is helping coaches turn research into something they can actually use tonight at the rink? Between the researcher who understands the science and the volunteer coach who has 50 or 60 minutes on the ice should be another person, a translator, interpreter, and learning designer.
