Join Laura Mary Phelps, host of the Good Friday podcast, as she continues her four-week series: Creating a Holy Rhythm: Finding Peace In A World That Never Stops.
Today’s episode is all about being prepared, and the secret to a well-ordered day: intentional preparation the evening before. God Himself divides time into a repeating cycle that begins with evening rest and moves into morning activity. This literal pattern offers a template for ordering our days. And it begins with the evening!
What do your evenings look like? Do you make space for evening prayer or do you go, go, go and scroll, scroll, scroll until you finally collapse in your bed? The reality is…the way you live tonight shapes your tomorrow… *and your eternity.*
You might want to grab a pen and paper for this one. It’s deeper than you realize.
**Key Takeaways.**
*Tomorrow begins tonight.* The way we prepare for the next day—physically, mentally, and spiritually—can shape the peace and order we experience when morning comes.
*Rest isn’t simply about stopping; it’s about preparing our hearts.* Night prayer gives us a chance to turn our attention away from our worries and toward God, so we wake up thinking about Him rather than immediately thinking about our to-do lists.
*An ordered exterior can help cultivate an ordered interior.* Simple acts like cleaning the kitchen, putting things away, preparing coffee, and setting out prayer materials require discipline and self-control—and those small acts can strengthen us spiritually.
*God is a God of order and peace.* The creation story in Genesis presents God bringing order out of chaos and establishing a rhythm of evening and morning—a pattern Laura suggests can become a template for ordering our own days.
*Spiritual preparation is different from simply looking prepared.* External religious practices can be good and beautiful, but Jesus sees what is happening in our hearts. True readiness requires an interior relationship with God.
*You can look prepared on the outside without actually being prepared on the inside.* True spiritual readiness comes from cultivating your own relationship with Christ.
**Key Scripture.**
**Genesis 1:1-5:** In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.
**Genesis 1:23:** And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.
**1 Corinthians 14:33:** For God is not a God of disorder, but of peace.
**Proverbs 12:1:** Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.
**Hebrews 12:5-6:** My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and He chastises every son He receives.
**Matthew 24:42:** Keep watch because you do not know the day your Lord will come.
**Luke 12:40:** Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.
**Luke 16:15:** You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts.
**Matthew 25:1–13:** The Parable of the Ten Virgins
**2 Corinthians 1:3-5**
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
