Upwing's subsurface compressor system provides a new way to source natural gas, by Daniel Felber.

Upwing Energy, a gas technology and service company, has inked a deal with Impresa Nacional de Petróleo, or ENAP, the largest energy company in Chile, to deploy its first subsurface compressor system in South America.

Upwing said that the system significantly enhances production and recoverability from gas assets while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions associated with production.

ENAP values data-driven decision-making in order to obtain the best results, said Herman Atinyan, chief executive officer of Upwing Energy.

The SCS will empower ENAP to increase the rate of production among existing wells, ensuring natural gas assets are optimized.

Upwing has worked closely with ENAP to gather data and analyze gas assets, identifying opportunities for additional production and application of the SCS.

We constantly evaluate new technologies that offer an opportunity to optimize the production of our assets, and we are convinced that, after careful analysis of Upwing's proposal and the evidence of its results, we will work with a strong partner in our energy future, said Exploration and Reservoir Manager Ivan Arigata.

This initiative represents the use of cutting-edge technology and marks a significant advance for ENAP, as we are the first company outside the traditional markets of the U.S., the North Sea, and the Middle East to implement this technology.

SCS Development SCS was derived in part from the proprietary technology of Upwing's former parent company, Calnetics Technologies, whose high-speed rotating systems have impacted everything from motorsports to medical devices to space and defense systems.

It was developed to offer energy producers a profitable and sustainable solution to the central problem in natural gas extraction, which is how to maximize production and recoverability from an existing well.

The company said SCS is the first tool of its kind to create drawdowns through a downhole compressor to increase gas production ranging from 20% to more than 200%, and increase reserves from 20% to more than 70%, depending on well conditions, all while reducing emissions.

Upwing will be installing its SCS across multiple well sites for ENAP's onshore operations in the Magallanes Basin to help secure Chile's energy resources for decades to come.

Conventional gas wells are naturally declining in output over time, leading producers to drill and frack new wells with diminishing returns to keep up with global energy demand growth, said Artinian.

The world needs more readily available energy, like natural gas, to be economically viable to produce and less intensive on the environment.

Our expert team of advanced turbomachinery engineers has spent the last several years adapting the tool for a variety of well conditions and optimizing the SCS's production and development process for seamless operation.

SCS Specifications Upwing's unique system transforms a traditional methane leaking wellhead compressor into a device that gets deployed two miles down within the well itself, vastly increasing recoverability and boosting natural gas production.

We developed the SCS by shrinking a traditional natural gas compressor with the physical footprint of a small house down to a 12 foot long and 5-inch diameter tube," said Artinian.

The SCS has several key components, allowing it to boost productivity in the subsurface environment.

Some of these include the hybrid compressor, which increases wellbore drawdown at the compressor intake and boosts pressure at the discharge.

Passive magnetic bearings, which provide greater reliability and do not require any controllers on the top side, and hermetically sealed high-speed PM motors, which allow for high-speed operation and isolation from harsh downhole environments.

All the while, Upwing's sensorless drive systems can operate and control the motor at speeds over 60,000 rpm from the surface while the tool is operating more than 12,000 feet downhole.

Lowering Emissions and Boosting Efficiency Unlike traditional topside compressors, which sit at the surface and inefficiently boost gas from the well, the SCS gets deployed two miles down within the well, close to the source, said Artinian.
