I mean, that's a good thing.

I mean, they're not just saying, "It's all about horsepower, you know, we're chasing those numbers." But they said, "Hey, we improved the NOx emissions." We don't know by how much yet.

Uh, but they improved a lot of that stuff.

Um, and also the big question was about the fuel pump, right? The CP3s, CP4s, a lot of those questions are flying around always.

And usually manufacturers don't like talking about it.

But I would almost think with that bigger engine and it being under stress-

But, but if it's cre- if it's creating less NOx to begin with-

It might use less

So what you saw as a result of that generally increases in the amount of additive that was used in the engine oil because they needed more dispersant additives to control soot and prevent it from thickening as a result of the accumulation of all that solid material and also more acid neutralizing capability um to handle some of those corrosive exhaust gases that got recirculated and because at that time we still had um higher sulfur fuel in the market than than we do today which is all ultra low sulfur diesel then 2007 comes along and so between 07 and 2010 is when you saw that sort of phase in of the regulations which made exhaust after treatment a requirement so lower particulate matter emission requirements that necessitated the use of diesel particulate filters.

And then ultimately these really stringent nitrogen oxide standards, which first introduced the use of selective catalytic reduction and DEF used to bring down tailpipe NOx emissions.

So it was at that point that we actually had to start learning how to do more with less because

I mean, how can you really complain about the cleaner air coming out of it? Yes, I know you're creating more pollution by creating all this stuff.

There are reasons for the NOx to be dropping.

I know this is going to get a lot of hate and I'm just thinking about it as I'm just talking, but this is honestly how I feel.

The NOx emissions, that's a real deal.

There's a lot to do with asthma and there's a lot of people that have breathing issues and they've tied NOx emissions to that.

So I'm okay with burning DEF in order to lower the NOx.

You can also lower the NOx by using EGR.

EGR is dirty and disgusting.

That gives the time for the system to warm up and start producing the optimal amount of gas, and then do the same readings along the same route at the same speed to get that.

Now, for this truck, this was an Iveco Cursor 10.

We got a, an eighty percent reduction in carbon monoxide and a forty-six percent reduction in the NOxs as well.

Now, this was done by a Testo 350.

Since this, we've now got a Testo 350, which also measures unburnt hydrocarbons and CO2.

What kind of configurations?

Specifically, the intense radiation forces the nitrogen and oxygen to fuse into various forms of nitrogen oxides, or NOx compounds.

Visually, if you were standing on the surface looking up, the sky wouldn't just be bright.

It would likely turn a sickly dark reddish brown as a massive global layer of toxic nitrogen dioxide gas formed in the stratosphere.

with their TDI engines because they had a calibration in them that gave better fuel economy but had high oxides of nitrogen emissions.

So they do that, and they measure CO, which is hydrocarbons, unburned fuel, HC, hydrocarbons unburned fuel, CO, which is partially burned fuel, NOx, oxides of nitrogen, which is created through pressure, heat, and exposure time.

So once the leading edge flame temperature in the cylinder is 2,500 degrees or higher, F, that it creates a high-level oxides of nitrogen.

That's what EGR is all about.

Kind of lost count, but he discusses this new report that CREA has compiled about source emissions of nitrous oxides in Indonesia from power plants and transportation fleets and nickel industries and the implications for the air quality.

And we discuss also the role of biodiesel in producing NOx emissions.

We also got a bit like quite generally into the fires, which was really handy for me because we recorded this last week.

So a day or two before it started to get really bad again.

And so now this is really interesting because CREA has got an innovative report that focuses just on one particular type of pollutant, which is so important and so often neglected, which is NOx, nitrous oxides.
