**Before asking what is wrong with the world or the person in front of us, perhaps we should ask what might be standing between our own eyes and the light.** What if the plank and the speck are not…
I think he's talking about our ability to see.
Something about me can interfere with how clearly I see you.
And that leaves us with some uncomfortable questions.
And humans don't like uncomfortable questions.
We like certainty.
We like to be comfortable.
This is where some of these snap judgments are allowed to live and propagate over our life.
What are you actually seeing? What assumptions did you inherit? What are you projecting? What does the crowd tell you to see? What are you refusing to see in yourself? And how much of the person standing in front of you is actually them? And how much is what you have brought to this encounter? But here's what I find remarkable about Jesus' teaching.
He doesn't say everyone has their own perspective so nobody can know anything.
He doesn't say your truth is your truth and their truth is their truth.
And he doesn't tell us to pretend the speck isn't there.
He says, first remove the plank from your own eye.
And then something becomes possible.
You can see more clearly.
That changes the entire teaching.
The goal isn't blindness.
The goal isn't moral indifference.
The goal is clearer sight.
But clearer sight begins with self-examination.
Poor in spirit.
Humility.
Remaining open.
The willingness to recognize maybe I don't already possess everything I need.
Maybe I can still learn.
