Kristine van DoorenHostThe months from August into the fall of 99 was the most dramatic and life-altering change in my life.
We had to carry on with jobs, schools, and church issues, even though our hearts were broken and tears were the new normal.
sadly we were not left in peace to process our grief the new normal included strangers from the word of faith church stopping in or calling us with disturbing messages even the funeral day which was supposed to be private with our immediate family had uninvited guests that showed up Rather than the help of true friends, it was like we had become a vulnerable target since Thomas was gone.
It reminded me of the phrase, termites were suddenly coming out of the woodwork.
It would take many months for us to understand what their hidden motives were.
But fortunately, as the amazing Psalm 91 says, I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress.
And because he loves me, says the Lord, I will rescue and protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
A couple of weeks after the funeral, I was home alone and the reality that Thomas was gone and I was left a widow at the age of 49 hit me.
There was nothing left to do but bow before the Lord, my maker, and say, I accept your will.
I laid down on the carpet in the bedroom hallway with my face to the floor and said in my heart, Lord, you gave me my husband.
And from Hebrews chapter 13, 5 and 6, I will never desert you, nor will I ever abandon you, so that we confidently say, the Lord is my helper.
What will man do to me? What can mere mortals do to me? Unconsciously, I had done the same thing that Job did when God allowed Satan to destroy his health, wealth, and kill all of his children.
Even his friends assumed that the tragedies were punishment for secret sins.
Yet the whole story begins with God saying, Job is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.
Job acknowledged the Lord by not only saying, the Lord gives and the Lord takes, but he also said, blessed be the name of the Lord.
