FMP 316: Create Your Best Birthday Ever Checklist

Does your spouse actually know what would make your birthday amazing? Where do you want to eat? What do you want to do? What kind of gift would you actually enjoy? Do you want a big celebration or a quiet day? Do you love surprises or hate them? Sometimes we expect our spouse to somehow know exactly what we want. Then our birthday arrives, they make their best guess, and we end up disappointed because the day wasn't what we hoped it would be. In Episode 316 of the Family Meeting Podcast, Thomas and Lysandra Osterkamp talk about creating your own "Best Day Ever" checklist, a simple way to know yourself better and give your spouse the information they need to celebrate you well. Communicating what you like doesn't ruin the surprise. It helps your spouse create better surprises! In this episode, we discuss: - Why your spouse shouldn't have to guess what makes you feel celebrated. - How unspoken birthday expectations can lead to disappointment. - Why you need to know your own likes, dislikes, and preferences. - How communicating what you want actually helps your spouse succeed. - Why sharing your preferences doesn't have to ruin the surprise. - How to create and share your own "Best Day Ever" checklist. Think about your ideal birthday. What would you want for breakfast? Where would you eat dinner? Would you rather go somewhere or stay home? Who would you want to spend the day with? What activities would you enjoy? What stores do you love? What kind of gifts would excite you? Now ask yourself: Does your spouse know those answers? Your spouse can love you deeply and still be terrible at guessing what you want. Instead of secretly testing whether they know you well enough to create your perfect day, give them the information they need to succeed. And here's the best part: they can still surprise you. If your spouse knows ten restaurants you love, ten gifts you'd enjoy, five activities you'd choose, and your favorite ways to celebrate, you still don't know what they're planning. You've simply given them a list of options you already know you'll enjoy. Know yourself. Communicate what you enjoy. Give your spouse the tools to love you well.
