Seeing is Not Believing, Part III, with J. D. Atkins: Acts 1:3

All right, Acts 1, verse 3.

What's happening in the beginning of the book of Acts here that we need to pay attention to?

Yeah.

We're told by Luke about what happened after his resurrection, but before his ascension.

So that's at the beginning of Acts, what happened after Jesus' resurrection, but before his ascension.

We're going to look at just verse 3.

It says here that he presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

Hmm.

That's what Jesus was doing after his resurrection, but before his ascension.

That's right.

Okay.

I did a bit of work on this particular text when I was working on my dissertation.

One of the nouns that's used in the Greek is techmerion.

And in this case, it's actually the plural techmeria.

Or in this case, it's in the dative techmeriois.

This is the word that is the word for proofs.

Now, if you read in the scholarship...

They will talk about techmeria in general.

They'll talk about it as an irrefutable proof.

Irrefutable.

As if, in a sense, a typical way goes back to Aristotle.

And so they would have an irrefutable proof, maybe, of that someone died would be the dead body.

Right? Here you go.

You don't really need any additional proof.

And so many commentators... refer to these quote-unquote irrefutable proofs, these techmeria, as a reference back to Luke 24, when Jesus says, hey, touch me and see.
