Now let's get to Ebola.

The Democratic Republic of Congo continues to battle an outbreak of Ebola caused by a rare strain, what used to be a rare strain, the Budibugyo.

Uganda has reported cases as well.

The World Health Organization has elevated concern about the outbreak, and public health officials are working to prevent spread throughout the region.

Now, before anyone starts doom-scrolling and stocking canned beans, take a breath.

Ebola is not COVID.

Ebola is not influenza.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with body fluids from infected individuals.

It is far less contagious than any respiratory virus.

But what makes Ebola terrifying is not how easily it spreads.

It is how deadly it can be.

And that brings us to the United States' response.

The CDC recently expanded travel restrictions related to the outbreak.

Green card holders are now included in temporary restrictions affecting travelers from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan.

Travelers from affected regions are being directed through specific airports where screening and monitoring can occur.

Reasonable people can debate whether these restrictions are necessary or effective, but another proposal caught my attention.

The administration proposed creating a quarantine and treatment facility in Kenya for Americans exposed to Ebola rather than bringing those patients back to specialized treatment centers in the United States.

Kenya's courts have now halted that proposal.

And personally, I think that's fortunate.

Because in the United States, we have built facilities designed exactly for this situation.

We have biocontainment facilities at Emory University.

We have the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.

We have highly trained teams who have successfully cared for Ebola patients before.

Now, these are not theoretical facilities.

These are real facilities staffed by real experts who have done this work.
