Last week, we saw the call to share our lives together - but what about when life is messy or difficult? In 1 Thessalonians 3, we see that gospel-shaped care draws near in those moments which leads to…

Finally, when we could stand it no longer, we decided to stay alone in Athens, and we sent Timothy to visit you.

He is our brother and God's coworker in proclaiming the good news of Christ.

We sent him to strengthen you, to encourage you in your faith, and to keep you from being shaken by the troubles you were going through.

Do you remember the troubles that were referred to here as we set up the, the context at the start of the series a, a couple of weeks ago? This is a, a young church experiencing persecution because of their faith in Jesus.

Remember, Paul was there and shared the gospel in the synagogue for three weeks and then got driven out of town.

So these guys weren't facing, like, minor inconveniences or a few awkward conversations.

The early Christians were taught that expecting, uh, sorry, were taught to expect that following Jesus would involve hardship.

For this congregation, that persecution was in their face from the moment that they first believed.

Paul writes about it r- regularly throughout his letters and often, and, and even shares that sharing in Christ's, that he delights in sharing in Christ's suffering because in them he comes to know Jesus more deeply.

But what should strike us, and what struck me in looking, uh, at, at this idea of suffering, is how the authors respond to it in this letter.

They love this church community so deeply that they can't bear not knowing what is going on in their fellowship.

And so what do the authors do? Well, first, they send Timothy to suss out the situation.

And the primary purpose of that trip was not just to deliver information or to solve any problems that had arisen, but rather it was to strengthen them, to encourage them, and to help them stand firm in their faith.

And we are gonna get an insight into that, uh, sorry, and in this moment, we are actually getting an insight into that love in action, the gospel in motion, genuine gospel care happening in this community.

Even from a distance, they intentionally move towards the Thessalonian church with the purpose of helping them to follow Jesus, to continue growing up in him.

It doesn't ignore suffering, but neither does it stop comforting people in the middle of it.
