When you’re in trouble, who do you turn to? For most of us, it’s usually our parents or maybe a sibling or good friend. But we can also turn to God. If we are convinced of His greatness, His kindness…
Why is that? Well, I can answer that on two levels.
I can answer that on the macro level, that big picture kind of level.
And the answer is that we're living in what theologians call a fallen world.
It's a broken world.
It's not a world as God made it or as God intended at the very start.
When God made everything, you look at the first two chapters of Genesis, God made everything and he looked at it and he said, it's good.
He made everything and it's good.
And then he made a woman and he said, it's very good.
But then in chapter three, it all goes awry.
Everything that was perfect in all respects all falls apart in chapter 3 because Adam and Eve, our first parents, they rebelled against God's authority.
They said, we don't want to live under your authority, God.
We think there's a better way.
As I say, we refer to this as the fall.
We fell in our relationship with God and as a result of that, we now live in a world that's cursed.
It's not as good as God made it to be in the beginning.
It's no longer perfect in every way.
Bad stuff happens all the time.
Although I do think we get shielded from it to some extent because Hebrews 1 tells us that God sends angels to care for us.
So I think we are shielded from it to some extent, but we're not immune from it completely.
So that's the macro.
When you say, well, why does all this stuff happen? Well, that's the macro explanation for it that the Bible gives us.
But what about the micro? When we drill it down from the out there, we live in a fallen world thing, to what about your life particularly, your life specifically? Well, I think to answer that, You need to get a handle on God's mission and you need to get a handle on God's great, big, grand plan for you and your life.
We need to understand those things in order for us to drill down to that micro level.
So firstly, God's mission.
