Let's begin in a tiny town deep in the middle of a vast pine forest where you spent your early years.
So my father was a policeman, and there was a bit of a practice back in the day where, you know, once you took your exams, it allowed you to, to move up the ranks, that you would need to then go and find a posting that would allow you to then move into that level.
And, you know, the first really available posting that came up was, was Murupara, and it was a little harder to fill.
Uh, the nearest assistance was an hour away, uh, and the sergeant at that station would live in the house in front of the station.
It's so interesting 'cause when I came to, to write about those years and write the anecdotes I remember, you know, including the, the time that when cutting through to go and get, you know, a mixed bag of lollies down at the dairy, you know, barefoot as we would do with our 25 cents in our pocket, you know, coming through the, the parking, the parking lot and seeing my dad surrounded by gang members and on his own.
And just, you know, observing what was obviously a pretty intimidating situation, and then believing that the only way he could get out of that must be physical force, and then him telling me later that that was not what he did.
That his, you know, that he really always focused on talking, negotiation, you know, um, trying to see someone else's perspective.
He was my first example of power, and he chose to use it in a very particular way.
He was always focused on what had led someone to that situation, and he was always thoughtful about people's dignity.
Mum and Dad decided that if we were going to a place where there was not a lot of entertainment, that they would invest an extraordinary proportion of their income in buying a VCR.
And I, I remember this because they would remind us constantly of how expensive this piece-
And then there was the Crown Lynn, you know, dinner set that mum and dad got for their wedding and, you know, it was only to be used on special occasions.
Uh, and there was one plate in particular that hadn't ki- you know, obviously when it had fired, didn't stay flat, so it spun.
