In March 2025, Heathrow Airport was completely shut down because of a power outage.

About 200,000 people were stranded while the airport was without power for almost 18 hours.

And in Pittsburgh, PA, local airport authorities are doing more than hoping because they have taken steps to protect themselves from a Heathrow-level shutdown through energy independence.

Pittsburgh's airport became the first major airport with its own microgrid that's wholly powered by on-site resources.
