Christ Church Cambridge Sunday sermon
What does he know that I don't? Maybe you're here this morning and you live outside Cambridge, so you've travelled into church today.
And so if that's true, maybe you've had that experience where you tell someone that you're about to drive into the city and they say something like, well, good luck with that.
And you ask yourself, what do they know that I don't? What do they know about that road that's closed, about the roadworks that'll be there, about the traffic that'll be queued up for miles? What do they know about that situation that you're about to drive into that means, well, you're going to be crawling into the city, wondering whether you'll actually make it by Christmas.
Well, if you've had that experience, then I wonder if today's Bible passage might feel just a little bit similar.
Through the summer, as Nev said, we're working our way line by line through the Lord's Prayer here for us in Matthew 6.
And today, we've reached the start of verse 13, where we're told to pray, lead us not into temptation.
And as we hear Jesus encouraging us as his disciples to pray like that, maybe we should ask ourselves, what does he know that I don't? Because I'm guessing that this is not something that you naturally think to pray for
yourself very often.
All sorts of things that instinctively come to mind, don't they? When you think about praying for yourself, praying for others.
But I wonder, when did you last pray for a Christian friend? Lord, today, please lead them not into temptation.
Well, as Jesus captures the core things that every Christian needs to include in their pattern of prayer, alongside other things we've been looking at through the summer, some of which maybe we feel our need for more easily.
Alongside those, Jesus tells us here, pray this, lead us not into temptation.
Why? Why would he prioritize this request when we maybe rarely do? What does Jesus know that we don't? Three things we're going to see this morning.
