Christ Church Cambridge Sunday sermon

And so we come to the final verse where he says, verse 13, but deliver us from the evil one.

Now, what does Jesus mean when he says deliver us? Does he mean deliver like you might deliver a letter or a parcel? No, no, I don't.

No, when Jesus says deliver, he means to rescue and protect someone, to rescue them from danger.

And so Jesus teaches us these words, deliver us from the evil one, because he's teaching us to do two things, to watch out and to shout help.

Now, to help us remember watch out, that's why I've got this big warning sign here.

Now, Jesus's friend and follower, Peter, tells us about just what the evil one is like in his first book.

Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

You might know what that's like because he's the one who lies to us and says, you know what, praying, that's not important.
