You and I have done so much together over the last few decades, from waging ballot initiatives together to try to help farmed animals to, uh, running races together.

And despite the fact that you are, uh, I think at least a decade older than me, you always beat me in these races, which always was, like, really hum- humbling to me to know how much faster you were than I am.
but otherwise, you're- you- you've really stepped it up, man, and I've sort of slowed it down a bit and since then.

I didn't want to seem too self-serving to say that I was one second behind the great Gene Baur, but it is true.

So, um, I, I... my hat's off to you for being such a stellar runner and a, and a great athlete.

We're recording this in September of 2026, but it was in July of 1996, 30 years ago, nearly to the month, that I told my mom that for my birthday the only thing that I wanted was her to take me to Farm Sanctuary.

And we visited Farm Sanctuary in that summer of 1996, and to this day, 30 years later, my mom has not eaten a single land animal because of that trip, and she said that if Farm Sanctuary had rescued fish, that she might be a full-fledged vegetarian.
