Making a Mass Murderer

On July 26th, 1996, the seventh day of the Atlanta Olympic Games, over 50,000 people gathered at Centennial Park.

The R&B band Jack Mack and the Heart Attack were performing that night, and thousands of fans were packed in the space between the stage and the NBC Sound Tower, a five-story, 40-foot-high scaffolding rig wired with speakers and lights.

One song after another, people sang and danced together until it was time for the band's break around 12.30 a.m. At the same time, a security guard named Richard Jewell came out of one of the bathrooms and noticed seven college-aged boys sitting on two of the three green benches in front of the NBC Sound Tower making a ruckus.

Apart from their drunk antics, the guard noticed they had two large bags.

One was clearly a cooler bag since they were pulling out fresh 12-ounce Budweiser's from it.

but the other was a large green Alice pack, pushed further under the left bench.

He eventually left them and went back to his post by the entrance on the other side of the NBC tower.

When Richard circled back to the same spot 20 minutes later, he saw that those young men had littered dozens of empty cans everywhere.

Now that was crossing a line.

Richard confronted the young men with limited success, so the security guard called the assistant commander of Park Security, Agent Tom Davis of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, or GBI for short.

They won't listen to me.

I need someone in law enforcement to talk to them, Richard complained to Tom.

by the time they both returned to the location half the guys had already dispersed into the large crowd leaving behind only two who were now picking up the empty beer cans but as soon as they saw the agent coming they tried to flee as well to avoid getting in trouble in their haste however they accidentally kicked the green alice bag that was under the bench richard immediately noticed and called out to tom hey tom They left out one of their bags right under that bench.
