That, for me, was the strongest takeaway from our conversation with Drew Holmgreen at Branded Worlds – The Transatlantic Dialog.
Our industry is changing noticeably: it is becoming more global, more professional, more strategic, and more relevant within the marketing mix of brands large and small. Customers think internationally. Supply chains are international. Brands are international. So we, as an industry, need to think, speak, and act more internationally as well.
What was particularly exciting: the latest global Economic Impact Study shows the enormous economic significance our industry already has today. This is no longer a niche topic, but a relevant global market with millions of jobs.
But size alone is not enough. What matters is how we understand our role.
When merch is developed with strategy, creativity, and genuine audience relevance, it becomes more than a product. It creates a physical connection between brand and people. Something that lasts. Something that is worn, used, remembered, and talked about.
The future of our industry will not emerge in isolation. It will be shaped through collaboration across countries, companies, associations, and generations.
The task is clear: move away from purely product-based thinking. Move toward consulting, strategy, and impact.
Merch is marketing. And it’s time we communicate it that way.
