In this episode of Beyond the Screen, Ryan and Jake tackle the Paramount settlement with 12 state attorneys general keeping the studios in California while agreeing to a massive 30-film yearly release…
We start every week with our first segment, which is always our box office segment.
So we go over not only the latest and greatest from the top five in the box office, we tell you the biggest and the best, but we also reveal not only our predictions, but how our predictions did from this past week.
So let's get into it.
Let's start with how we did going into this weekend.
Jake, my hot streak ended and yours
wow i i went from averaging about three or four out of five every week to down to two not doing too hot as my top five i only get two out of five followed by claude claude finished second getting five or four out of five and jake wins the weekend getting five out of five jake's lead pushes all the way back up to seven after again he predicted the correct straight out 100 accuracy so i predicted uh resident evil at one practical magic at number two then i had the transformers the movie the 1986 re-release didn't happen the 40th anniversary release did not make as much as i thought it would then i had spider-man in the odyssey at four and five all three incorrect claude predicted resident evil at one practical magic two at two spider-man at three the odyssey at four and runner at five getting all but runner correct pushing its season total up to 76 and jake predicted in accurate order Resident Evil, Practical Magic 2, Spider-Man, The Odyssey, and Coyote v. Acme, one through five, nailing the top five, getting another five out of five on his season total and pushing his winning total to 82.
So again, Jake leads with 82, followed by TJ at 76, which is Claude and me at 75.
We've seen before, while it is out of a one weekend's amount, I'm not out of reach.
No, as soon as
I just got to push it back.
I just got to push it back.
So anyway, getting back into the swing of things here.
That one through five, again, Resident Evil at one, Practical Magic 2 at two, Spider-Man Brand New Day finishes third, The Odyssey at fourth, and Coyote v. Acme at five.
So let's go on ahead and tell you the exact numbers.
So in its debut, Resident Evil earns $60 million domestically and $108.3 million globally, all on a $75 million budget.
The Zack Kreger-directed horror adaptation demolishes the projected $40 to $50 million opening that, again, was, in hindsight, analysts were saying $40 to $50 million.
Completely demolishes that.
As people... 37% of those people actually who were polled leaving the theater said they went specifically for Craigers.
So continuing an interesting trend – that's according to the Daily's newsletter – continuing an interesting trend where directors outshine – stars you don't really you don't really bill a list stars anymore to bring in talent you you build the director behind it that's just it's such an interesting fad we talked about it with it was um it wasn't crager's last year it was um coogler it was ryan coogler last year then we saw it earlier this summer even with nolan who nolan's film still in this after 10 weekends which is nuts we'll get to that in the odyssey at number four but now we're seeing it with crager with his follow-up after last year's Oscar-winning film, Weapons.
What do we think about that? Do we think that that's a trend that will continue with directors?
